Saving & Snapshots
This is the feature everything else is built on: when you save a page, Ewig keeps the page, not just its address.
What gets saved
Every bookmark captures two artifacts:
- A self-contained HTML snapshot: the page with all its resources inlined into a single file. It renders offline, in any browser, no external requests. If the site disappears tomorrow, your copy doesn’t care.
- A full-page screenshot: the whole page as an image, exactly as it looked when you saved it. You can regenerate it from the snapshot any time.
Capture happens in an offscreen browser engine on the device you save from, whether that’s Mac, iPhone or iPad. The page is rendered for real, so what you archive is what you saw.
Bookmark statuses

| Archived | The snapshot and screenshot were captured successfully. The page is preserved. |
| Pending | Queued for capture, for example a save from the Watch, or a batch import. Archives automatically in the background. |
| Failed | Capture hit an error (timeout, blocked page, script failure). Retry from the card’s context menu. |
Status badges appear on every card and row, with a subtle shimmer while archiving is in progress.
Versioning pages that change
Some pages change: prices, docs, articles that get “updated.” Choose Back Up Now (⌘B) to add a fresh, dated snapshot alongside the existing ones. Every version stays browsable from the bookmark’s Archive tab, fully offline.
Covers
The cover is the image on a bookmark’s card. Ewig generates it from the top of the page, at a fixed width so your grid looks the same on every device. You can:
- Regenerate a cover (⌘R), per card or in bulk via multi-select.
- Capture your own: replace the auto cover with a photo or a short video, captured right in the app on Mac or iOS. Video covers are encoded as space-efficient HEVC.
Covers and screenshots are stored as HEIC by default: the same quality at a fraction of the size.
